I absolutely love typing. Weird – I know. Some people think there are a lot of weird things about me but whatevs.
Because I love typing I have always wanted to do transcription from home. I even have formal education and work experience doing general and medical transcription. However, apparently it’s been too long ago or it wasn’t enough experience because I still wasn’t qualified for many of the work from home transcription jobs I found when I decided I wanted to start doing this again.
But then I found the following so I’m sharing them with all of you!
TranscribeMe! This is one that I actually work for and have experience with. You don’t make a ton of money with them but it’s a good starting point if you don’t have experience. You have three attempts to pass their test so don’t worry if you don’t make it the first time. Once you pass the test and start working, quite quickly you are given the opportunity to test for other transcription opportunities and also to test to become a QA in order to increase your earning potential.
Transcription For Everyone. Their website says “Inexperienced, but highly motivated, individuals are more than welcome.” They do have some required skills and office requirements but it’s right there in black and white that if you are highly motivated they are willing to give you a shot.
1-888-TYPE-IT-UP. Go to their website and fill out their application. Once you complete the application, they will email you the transcription test. This company is very, very clear that they want you to follow instructions to the T and they DO NOT want any phone calls regarding the application process. They do have a bunch of information on their website and a FAQ page for additional information.
TigerFish. I don’t have personal experience with this company but I know they’ve been around for many years and their name comes up regularly so I know they are very reputable otherwise I wouldn’t add them to this list. Definitely worthy of an application and an attempt at their test.
Scribie. Another that I have heard quite a bit about. In reviewing their job page it doesn’t look like they pay all that great but if you can pass the test it would be a good way to get a feel for transcription and get some experience before moving on to some of the bigger companies.
These next few I don’t now much about other than that I’ve heard they don’t require experience so I’m just going to list them out with the links to their job pages.
CrowdSurf. (I liked their website and think I might check them out myself!)
One other thing to note is that some of these do have specific style guides. If the company has a style guide, I can’t stress enough the importance of studying the heck out of that guide before you attempt the test.
These transcription companies are very serious about their style guides!
And not all style guides are created equally!
The style guides are similar from company to company but they are not exact so make sure you study them before you jump into the tests.
