What No One Tells You About Working From Home – Part 2

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

YIKES! I forgot one VERY important thing about working from home!

The Littles!

They certainly are not unimportant (I have five of my own they just aren’t little anymore) but because mine aren’t “Littles” anymore I totally overlooked them and I’m so sorry! I know they are a HUGE factor for SO, SO many of you!

And believe it or not, just because mine aren’t little anymore, doesn’t mean that I don’t have personal experience dealing with this as part of my work from home experience.

My middle not-so-Little-anymore will still come lay on my office floor during his lunch hour just to hang out.

Just because it’s his lunch hour doesn’t mean it’s my lunch hour. And I love that he wants to hang out with his mommy but sometimes I don’t have time to drop what I’m doing to chat with him.

One of the companies I worked for virtually did a ton of Skype video meetings and many of the staff had toddlers and school age kids. It was not uncommon to see little heads popping up during a meeting or hearing fighting in the background.

There were also times when staff got calls from the school that required them to go pick up sick or hurt kids which was obviously an interruption to their day.

These are all things to also take into consideration when trying to decide what you want to do for your work from home job. Some companies will be flexible and allow these types of interruptions. Obviously if you choose to go the self-employed route then that will just have to be something you juggle on your own. Other companies have very strict policies about absolutely no background noise.

As you become more familiar with the different work from home companies and the different positions, you will get a much better feel for what will work for your situation and what absolutely will not.

Also, as your Littles become not-so-Littles anymore, (boo!) your situation will change and you may choose to change jobs.

See how fun and flexible working from home is!

But in the meantime, while they are still small, there are a few things you can do to try to get some quality working time:

  • Have a separate office area with a door that closes
  • Schedule your work hours when the Littles are sleeping or someone else can watch them
  • Schedule your work hours when the Littles are at school
  • Choose jobs that you can do on your phone or tablet (these likely will just be extra side cash and not full-time income)

If anyone has any other great tips or tricks for working from home with Littles, please feel free to comment or email me.
